Lingen Davies was originally launched in 1979 by then Mayor of Shrewsbury Bernard Lingen and local accountant Frank Davies, to build and equip a new radiotherapy department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Since this establishment, the charity has grown to deliver services, equipment, technology, staff, and cancer support to the wider community.
Over the years an entire new Cancer Centre has been created on the site, including state of the art facilities and treatment to benefit cancer patients throughout the community.
The charity exists to enhance and improve the situation for local cancer patients. We cannot eradicate cancer, but we can make life easier for those who are going through it, or watching loved ones go through it.
We have grown from a small charity run by a handful of people who helped others raise money, to a major local charity, not only fundraising for enhanced services and treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but also actively delivering projects with partners and local health bodies. Our LiveLife Cancer Awareness Service is dedicated to working in the wider community, to reach more people and help them have a greater understanding of cancer – which one in two of us will get during our lifetime, according to Cancer Research UK statistics.
We want everyone to be aware of the simple steps they can take themselves to reduce the chances of getting cancer. We want people to know the importance of attending cancer screening invitations, recognise worrying signs and symptoms in their own bodies, and know where to turn for support.
We recognise that while our team of wonderful NHS clinicians do everything they can to help cancer patients medically; we can fund and provide additional cancer support and services to benefit patients, their families, and the wider community.
Looking forward, we have plans to grow, reaching further into BAME groups throughout our region, grow our service delivery work, and facilitate easier access into all parts of our region with our mobile LiveLife Cancer Awareness Service. We already work alongside Severn Hospice, LifeStyle Fitness, and the 5K Your Way Parkrun group to deliver and promote services that will benefit those going through cancer treatment and living beyond it.
Your cancer donation can make a positive difference to lives affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid-Wales.
